Get to know your floor

Education is key. The more you know about your particular stone floor, the better. You may know the type of floor you have, or you may need to look into the stone type. There are two major sections based around either natural stone or manmade tiles. Both have variations within them, but it is important to identify exactly what type of stone you are dealing with.

Select the right cleaning products

By first identifying the type of stone floor you have, you can then look into what products best suit the cleaning process. Some cleaning products can damage particular stone floors so getting the correct cleaner is really important.

If you need a stronger cleaner for stubborn or ingrained dirt, then chose the right cleaning product for the stone. Also, make sure to rinse the floor with clean water after using a strong cleaner. As a general rule of thumb, only use neutral ph cleaners on stone floors.

Routine cleaning

Old cotton mops are unhygienic and inefficient. They tend to drag a log of the dirt around and push grime into your grout lines. Modern microfibre mops work in a better way. They can be washed regularly so do not collect the dirt and grime in their fibres. Another added benefit is that they don’t carry as much water and therefore will be much less likely to damage your stone floor.

Dry particles including grit and dirt will damage your stone floors and the surface stone sealer. The best possible way to avoid this is to dry sweep your floor daily. You may need to do this more frequently in homes with children and pets.
