Through our time in the stone cleaning trade, we have come across many myths. Sometimes these are widespread and so it is therefore important that we tell the truth. It may just be a passing comment that a client will make, but part of our service is to ensure our clients are left well-informed.

The following information has therefore been put together in order to put right some of the stone cleaning myths.

Myth 1: I don’t need to hire a professional stone cleaner for the first five years my floor is laid

Natural stone floors react to acidic substances and improper cleaning solutions. If you spill something acidic onto your stone floor it will react immediately with the surface. It is an appropriate comment to say that softer stones do require more maintenance. The truth is that there is no fixed time after installation that is stated before you require the help of a professional stone cleaner. Varying factors include the location of the tiles, the use, whether shoes are worn on the floor, the use of appropriate stone cleaning products and much more. It is suggested that you seek assistance with stone sealing and cleaning annually. Some properties may need more regular visits than this, other may be able to last a little longer. The best thing to do is to seek the advice of your local stone floor cleaning expert.

Myth 2: You can use household products such as vinegar to clean and disinfect your stone

It is important that you are careful using products such as vinegar (as an acidic product). Again, natural stones will react to solutions like this. Your stone worktop of floor may be left with etch marks that require the help of a professional to fix. Essentially, some household products such as vinegar will dull the surface of your stone. This cannot be cleaned or removed by any other method. Stone requires careful selection of a neutral, stone-specific cleaning product.

Myth 3: If your floor looks ok it does not need re-application of a stone sealer

Sealing your stone floors is such an important process. It offers protection against oil, grease and general staining. Sealed tiles offer resistance against liquid penetrating the surface. This is not always entirely visible to the eye. We would always suggest resealing your stone floors annually.
